White South African man has been granted refugee status in Canadaafter an immigration board ruled he faces persecution if he is returned to his native country.
Brandon Huntley, 31, from Cape Town, said he had been stabbed three times by robbers, who called him a ‘White dog’ and a ‘settler’ – a reference to South Africa’s colonial past based on racial apartheid.
He told the panel: ‘There’s a hatred of what we did to them and it’s all about the colour of your skin.’
Board chairman William Davis said: ‘I find the claimant would stand out like a sore thumb due to his colour in any part of the country.’
He claimed Mr Huntley’s evidence showed ‘a picture of indifference and inability or unwillingness of the South African government to protect White South Africans from persecution by African South Africans’.
It is thought to be the first time a White South African man has been granted refugee status in Canada claiming he was the victim of Black aggression
Johannesburg - South African Brandon Huntley has lost his latest bid to stay in Canada, after applying for refugee status, the Sunday Times reported.
On Wednesday Canada’s Federal Court of Appeal dismissed his appeal against the withdrawal last year of his refugee status.
The 33-year-old, who works as a handyman at a carnival, would now take his case to Canada’s Supreme Court. According to his lawyers this would buy him another four years in Canada. He left South Africa in 2004.
In 2009 Huntley successfully argued to the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Board that as a white man, he was being targeted by black criminals in South Africa. He claimed he had been robbed at least seven times in racially-motivated attacks.
Canada’s Immigration Minister Jason Kenney took the matter to the federal court for review. The court agreed the board had been wrong.
The federal court described Huntley’s appeal as “totally unmeritorious”. It dismissed his claims that Kenney acted because of “diplomatic pressure”.
His lawyers Rocco Galati and Russell Kaplan said they were not being paid to handle the case.
When asked for comment, Huntley’s father Robert, who lives in Pringle Bay near Cape Town, told the Sunday Times: “No, I was not aware that he’ll be coming back. And no, I don’t care. No comment.” (Thank you Kev)

Canada’s Minister of Immigration and Citizenship is basically says ‘F U’ to all SA citizens affected by SA crime, because the truth is that if it sets a white refugee legal precedent; the effects thereof would force SA Gov.; if they really gave a flying rats ass about SA citizens affected by crime, which they don’t (but if they did), to do something about Safety and Security; i.e. about appointing SAPS officers on merit, not AA & BEE; i.e. incompetence. But Canada don’t care; Canada has no problem with SA becoming Zimbabwe II, so Canada is basically saying ‘Screw you to all SA’s affected by crime, white and black.’ So, not only are the ANC giving SA citizens an Abner Louima; but Canada is saying ‘No Problem’. Nice Canadian Friends huh?
