SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., (Aug. 20, 2013) — In court papers filed today (PDF), the United States Department of Justice requested that George W. Bush, Richard Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice and Paul Wolfowitz be granted procedural immunity in a case alleging that they planned and waged the Iraq War in violation of international law.
Plaintiff Sundus Shaker Saleh, an Iraqi single mother and refugee now living in Jordan, filed a complaint in March 2013 in San Francisco federal court alleging that the planning and waging of the war constituted a “crime of aggression” against Iraq, a legal theory that was used by the Nuremberg Tribunal to convict Nazi war criminals after World War II.
"The DOJ claims that in planning and waging the Iraq War, ex-President Bush and key members of his Administration were acting within the legitimate scope of their employment and are thus immune from suit,” chief counsel Inder Comar of Comar Law said.
The “Westfall Act certification,” submitted pursuant to the Westfall Act of 1988, permits the Attorney General, at his or her discretion, to substitute the United States as the defendant and essentially grant absolute immunity to government employees for actions taken within the scope of their employment.

Obama to Impose New Gun Control Measures

With the political world focused on Mideast tensions and looming fiscal battles, the move signaled Obama's intent to show he hasn't lost sight of a cause he took up after 20 first graders and six adults were gunned down last year at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

One new policy will end a government practice that lets military weapons, sold or donated by the U.S. to allies, be reimported into the U.S. by private entities, where some may end up on the streets. The White House said the U.S. has approved 250,000 of those guns to be reimported since 2005; under the new policy, only museums and a few other entities such as the government will be eligible to reimport military-grade firearms.

The Obama administration also is proposing a federal rule to stop those who would be ineligible to pass a background check from skirting the law by registering a gun to a corporation or trust. The new rule would require people associated with those entities, like beneficiaries and trustees, to undergo the same type of fingerprint-based background checks as individuals if they want to register guns.

California May Allow Non-Physicians To Perform Abortions

The California State Senate recently approved a bill, AB154, that would allow nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives and physician assistants to perform aspiration abortions during the first trimester.
This type of abortion includes inserting a tube and using a suction machine.
The State Senate approved the bill by a 25-11 vote, but it goes back to the California Assembly for a final vote, notes the Associated Press.
According to State Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson (D), the bill would make abortions available in areas of California that don't have enough doctors.

Oregon, Montana, Vermont and New Hampshire currently allow nurse practitioners to perform this type of abortion.

Russia: West is acting in Muslim world like a ‘monkey with a grenade’

More U.S. Men Are Living Alone

More American men are living on their own these days–possibly due to an increase in divorce rates in recent decades and the fact that the children of divorced couples usually live with their mothers.
The share of one-person households in the U.S. maintained by men ages 15 to 64 rose to 34% in 2012, up from 23% in 1970, according to a Census report on the status of families released Tuesday. For women of the same age, this figure actually dropped slightly, to 30% in 2012 from 31% in 1970.
The findings may reflect, in part, the sharp increase in divorce rates in the U.S. throughout the 1970s, Census said. The dominant living arrangement for children following their parents’ divorce is custody by mothers.
“Men more often than women live alone following divorce,” the Census report notes.

The U.S. divorce rate, which can be measured several ways, has been falling but remains well above its early-1970s level. There were about 877,000 divorces and annulments in 2011, down from 944,000 in 2000, even though the U.S. population grew substantially, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Sexually transmitted disease rates rise among elderly: Why?

What's causing the STD boom in baby boomers?
Editorial author Rachel von Simson, of King's College London, told WebMD that all the baby boomers who helped usher in the sexual revolution might have simply stayed sexually active.
Or the reason could be drugs. According to a 2010 study that examined the relationship between erectile dysfunction rates and STD rates among the elderly, the dramatic rise in STD cases coincides with Viagra's introduction in 1998, HealthPopreported.
Can anything be done to buck the trends?

The rise of men living alone probably isn’t just about divorce. More men likely are living alone because they’re delaying marriage, or maybe they’re in better health in their older years.

Shift work disorder: overview and diagnosis.

Source

Sleep Disorders and Research Center, Henry Ford Hospital Sleep Center, Detroit, Michigan, USA.

Abstract

Shift work disorder is a type of sleep disorder that occurs when an individual is unable to successfully synchronize his or her internal clock with a work schedule that requires staying awake and working when it is dark and sleeping when it is light. Approximately 10% of shift workers suffer from this disorder, which seriously impairs their ability to function. Shift work disorder is associated with increased risk of gastrointestinal problems, cancer, depression, heart disease, excessive sleepiness and accidents, and decreased productivity. This report describes the prevalence, diagnostic criteria, differential diagnosis, and clinical consequences of shift work disorder to help clinicians recognize this impairing condition.

Ever heard of "shift work disorder?" It's a new disease being played up by the pharmaceutical industry to sell drugs so dangerous that even the home page of the drug website admits the drug may kill you.

One such drug is called "Nuvigil," sold by Cephalon, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. The warning text on the Nuvigil website says:

“Over the last half-century, the trend in the U.S. has been toward smaller households, fewer family and married-couple households with children, and more people living alone,” Census researcher Jonathan Vespa said. “Many of these trends reflect … older adults who can live in their own home for longer.”

Incredible Shrinking US Family

December 02, 2004, Monitor, The(Uganda)
Over the last several decades the size of US families has shrunk. The percentage of households containing five or more people has fallen by half and the number of single and two-person households has soared. Compared to the middle of the 20th century, marriage is not a universal status of adulthood. Disney films have depicted a number of untraditional family groups but the model of three children living with both their natural parents, is retro today. In 1970, 21% of households had five or more people, today it has dropped to 10% while households with one or two people increased from 46% to 60%. The number of people per household decreased from 3.14 to 2.57. The proportion of young, never-married singles has increased, particularly women 30 to 34 which has tripled since 1970. The reduced fertility is the result of the increase in the percentage of women who work and the rising expense of raising children. Parents are more concerned with putting effort into the raising of each child and unlike European societies, the US has limited government support for families. Big families may be becoming the province of the upper classes who can afford them. The US has an estimated 5.5 million stay-at-home parents, and of these, 5.4 million are women. There are only 98,000 stay-at-home dads. doclink
