LAKE ARIEL, Pa. – A U.S. man is accused of fatally striking his newborn with a cinderblock twice because he and his girlfriend couldn’t afford a second child.
The parents of the man, Christopher Fitzpatrick, told investigators their son had admitted killing the girl May 28 and burying her near the landscaping business where he worked.
Detectives visited the home of Fitzpatrick’s parents last week seeking his girlfriend, Jennifer Barrise, 28, on a domestic relations warrant, according to arrest papers.
Fitzpatrick’s parents told investigators their daughter was with their son and his girlfriend when Barrise gave birth in a car. Fitzpatrick dropped them off at the couple’s home, then left with the apparently healthy baby, a police affidavit said.
Investigators said the girl told her parents about the baby and when they confronted their son, he claimed to have dropped off it off at a hospital. But he later admitted killing the baby, police said.More at Source
Police said Christopher Fitzpatrick, 20, killed his newborn daughter at his work place near Hamlin. Investigators said Fitzpatrick told them he couldn’t afford to keep his daughter.
Officials at Wayne Memorial Hospital said there are options to parents with unwanted babies, especially one at their hospital which allows unwanted babies to be dropped off with no questions asked.
A memorial is now set up behind M n’ D Lawn and Tree Service in near Hamlin, marking the site where the body of the infant girl was found.
Fitzpatrick and his girlfriend, Jennifer Barrise, are charged with criminal homicide. Police said Fitzpatrick killed his infant daughter soon after she was born on Memorial Day. He took the baby to the back of his work place, beat the baby with a cinder block and buried the body.
His girlfriend is also behind bars after informing police she knew Fitzpatrick was going to kill the newborn child because he couldn’t afford to keep it.
“It’s very bothersome that happened to a newborn like that. There were plenty of alternatives there,” said Jim Pettinato of Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Workers there said the death could have been prevented. They have a program called Safe Haven in which people can drop off their unwanted babies that are up to 28 days old. In 2003 the state established the Newborn Protection Act which means unwanted babies can be dropped off at hospitals with no questions asked.More at Source
