Rasaan Zawadi, Arrested In Brutal Attack On Woman
One of the men suspected of beating a mentally impaired woman – and video-taping the incident – is now behind bars.
Rasaan Zawadi, 21, was tracked down on Thursday morning after outraged community members demanded an arrest. The viral videoangered people from coast to coast, with concerned calls coming in to Sacramento police from all over the country.
The Sacramento Police Department arrested Zawadi for assault with a gang enhancement. Detectives believe that the assault was gang-related.
The second suspect has not yet been arrested but police went to Zawadi’s house Thursday afternoon on Oxford Hill Court and were questioning two men, one of whom was handcuffed and put in the back of a patrol car.
Zawadi appeared to offer a confession of sorts to CBS13?s Koula Gianulis when he was being transferred from the police station to the Sacramento County Jail later Thursday afternoon. When she asked him, “Was that you in the video?” He answered, “Yeah, n—–.”
In the video, two suspects taunt a woman standing in front of a doughnut shop on Mack Road in south Sacramento. As they laugh, Zawadi smacks the woman in the face. She finally reacts and chases him, then later in the video the other suspect punches her in the face, knocking her to the ground.
Police connected the video to an emergency call they received Oct. 1. When officers arrived at the scene shortly after noon, the 42-year-old victim declined to press charges or receive medical attention. The video, however, provided police with clear images of the two suspects.
That, along with tips from the public, led detectives to Zawadi. Detectives working with the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office obtained an arrest warrant for Zawadi and were preparing to look for him when a Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputy stopped him near German Drive and French Road on Thursday morning on an unrelated incident.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP (4357) or text in a tip to 274637 (CRIMES). Enter SACTIP followed by the tip information.
