Hundreds of fans, many of them grown men, gathered in Richmond, B.C., Saturday to show their love for the children's animated show, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

The event was the first national Canadian convention for the fans, who call themselves "bronies" — a portmanteau of "bros" and "ponies."

Nearly 800 people from across Canada and the United States attended the event, which featured a "Ponyville Idol" contest, a pajama party and various panels featuring voice actors, writers and musicians on the show.

The bronies, who came bedecked in costumes inspired by the show, say they hoped to spread the My Little Pony message of tolerance, inclusion and friendship to non-bronies who may not understand the show's appeal.

"As a man, you think to yourself: 'What am I doing with my life?'" said fan Alex Atley. "As I kept on watching it…my heart, so to speak, became lighter and softer and ever since then I cannot be happier."

'Colourful and innocent'

"I don't think you have to have bad intentions to like little girls or to like the things that they like," Faust said. "And it's upsetting to me that people jump to those conclusions. I think it's unfair to men and I think it's unfair to girls and women."

To set the record straight about Bronies, Faust, John de Lancie and others are producing a documentary that filmed over the weekend at BronyCon. De Lancie is the voice of Discord on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and is perhaps best known for playing the character Q on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Zac North travelled from his hometown of Dayton, Ohio, to be with fellow Bronies in New Jersey this weekend. He dressed as his favourite character, the antagonistic Discord, wearing a hooded and multicolored costume complete with a dragon tail, since Discord is a pony-dragon hybrid.

Why does he like the show?

"It's colourful and innocent, which is something I don't have in my life," the 26-year-old Sam's Club worker said. "I like the community away from the show."

Twenty-year-old My Little Pony fan Gabby Pantaloni of Hershey, Pa., said she was kind of shocked that so many guys like the show, as she stood in a line at BronyCon to get her picture taken with other enthusiasts dressed like her favorite character Rarity.

Faust told The Associated Press at BronyCon on Saturday that she never imagined the show would be such a hit with teenage boys and young men. She said her main target was little girls, but she hoped to draw in moms and perhaps some boys with strong characters and compelling story lines.

"We live in a society where saying that something is for girls is the equivalent to saying that something is stupid, or saying that something isn't worthwhile," Faust said.

"I think that's awful and I think that kind of attitude needs to be changed," she said. "And these men are doing it. … They're proud that they're forward-thinking and modern enough to look past this misogynistic attitude."

A female forger from the former Soviet Union was slapped with nearly two years in prison today for creating phony identity papers that helped a fraud ring scam more than $57 million in Holocaust reparations from the German government. 

A weeping Dora Grande bowed her head in shame and let out a whimper after Manhattan federal Judge Thomas Griesa said she deserved a “meaningful penalty” for forging about 300 documents at $100 a pop while working as a translator and notary public in Brooklyn. 

In addition to the 21 months prison time — just three months shy of the maximum under her plea deal — Griesa ordered Grande to forfeit the $30,000 she pocketed through the scam, and also pay $75,000 in restitution. 

Defense lawyer Glenn Morak argued that Grande, 65, had no idea that her fake birth certificates would be used in a massive scheme to rip off the Manhattan-based Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany. >>more<<

Amid Genocide Alert, Racist New Black Panthers Hit South Africa

Even as the world’s most prominent expert on genocidewarns that South Africa’s European-descent Afrikaner population is on the verge of government-linked extermination, the virulently racist U.S.-based “New Black Panther Party” has a delegation visiting the so-called “Rainbow nation” — a country now ruled by a president whoopenly sings about murdering whites. The NBPP and its leadership have regularly called for genocide against white South Africans as well, so critics of the visit are expressing alarm, concerned that the officially recognized hate group is agitating for further ethnic cleansing while collaborating with genocidal elements within the regimes ruling South Africa and Zimbabwe.

On the NBPP’s official website, the New Black Panthers boast about their “historic” trip to Marxist-ruled Zimbabwe and South Africa, which the anti-white and anti-Semitic organization refers to as “Azania.” During broadcasted conference calls about the visit posted online, members and leaders of the group were caught plotting to accelerate the elimination of European-descent South Africans from their homeland. On the call, participants claimed they would “raise up a black army” and offer military training, bragging about collaborating with people who have murdered whites and calling for more racist killings.

The NBPP did not return a request for comment from The New American. However, according to a statement released online, the vaguely outlined purposes of the visit apparently include creating a better future as well as uniting African and black countries. In reality, as the group’s publicly available radio shows and frequent genocidal remarks demonstrate, the true purpose of the ongoing visit is more likely to help pursue the ultimate extermination of all European-descent Africans from the region.  MORE

Israel approves more expansion of settlement near Jerusalem

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel on Thursday issued a detailed plan for the building of some 800 new homes on annexed land in the West Bank that is certain to attract further international condemnation of its settlement policies.

A planning committee issued a call for bids from contractors to start building 797 housing units on the western slopes of the urban settlement of Gilo, an area that Israel seized in the 1967 Middle East war and later declared part of Jerusalem.

The annexation has never been recognized internationally.

Israel “planned to starve” the people of Gaza     

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military calculated the number of calories that Gaza’s residents would need to consume to avoid malnutrition during a sweeping blockade imposed on the Palestinian territory from 2007 to mid-2010, according to a document that the Defense Ministry released under a court order and that was made public on Wednesday.

 

The military insisted that it never used the guidelines to restrict the flow of food to Gaza. But critics disputed that, saying the calculations appeared to have guided limits on food imports. They said the document provided further evidence that Israel used food as a weapon to put pressure on Hamas, the militant group that won legislative elections in 2006 and took full control of Gaza in 2007 after a brief factional war.

The blockade was imposed shortly after Hamas took over Gaza. Israel declared it a hostile territory in September 2007. Seeking to weaken the militants, it called for “severe restrictions” on civilians that included limitations on food.

The Defense Ministry handed over its document only after Gisha filed a freedom-of-information petition.

Israel is said to have often used secret guidelines to differentiate between humanitarian necessities and nonessential luxuries. The result was that military officials enforcing the blockade allowed frozen salmon and low-fat yogurt in, but not cilantro or instant coffee.

Hamas blunted the blockade by building a network of underground tunnels through which food, weapons and other contraband were smuggled from Egypt. While the embargo crippled Gaza’s economy, observers never identified a food crisis in the territory, whose residents rely heavily on international food aid.
