The rusting relics of an eerie Hungarian train graveyard

These are the eerie images of an abandoned train yard in Hungary where visitors can see rotting carriages once used by the Nazis to transport hundreds of thousands of Jews to their deaths at Auschwitz concentration camp.

The pictures, taken at the Istvantelek train workshop near Budapest, are a snapshot of a bygone era, with huge locomotives standing in a crumbling shed that is slowly being reclaimed by nature reports the Daily Mail

The repair shop opened in the early 1900s and has witnessed 80 years of tumultuous Hungarian history that included the fall of a monarchy, Nazi occupation and transformation into communist state loyal to the Soviet Union.

Among the decaying carriages are trains that look identical to those used by the Nazis to transport nearly 440,000 Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz between May and July 1944.  more from source

I wasn’t going to write this letter, but today i’ve been dodging phone calls from various newspapers who wished me to remark upon your having said in Rolling Stone your Wrecking Ball video was designed to be similar to the one for Nothing Compares … So this is what I need to say … And it is said in the spirit of motherliness and with love.

I am extremely concerned for you that those around you have led you to believe, or encouraged you in your own belief, that it is in any way ‘cool’ to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your videos. It is in fact the case that you will obscure your talent by allowing yourself to be pimped, whether its the music business or yourself doing the pimping.

 Nothing but harm will come in the long run, from allowing yourself to be exploited, and it is absolutely NOT in ANY way an empowerment of yourself or any other young women, for you to send across the message that you are to be valued (even by you) more for your sexual appeal than your obvious talent. I am happy to hear I am somewhat of a role model for you and I hope that because of that you will pay close attention to what I am telling you.

The music business doesn’t give a shit about you, or any of us. They will prostitute you for all you are worth, and cleverly make you think its what YOU wanted … and when you end up in rehab as a result of being prostituted, ‘they’ will be sunning themselves on their yachts in Antigua, which they bought by selling your body and you will find yourself very alone.

None of the men ogling you give a shit about you either, do not be fooled. Many’s the woman mistook lust for love. If they want you sexually that doesn’t mean they give a f**k about you. All the more true when you unwittingly give the impression you don’t give much of a f**k about yourself. And when you employ people who give the impression they don’t give much of a f**k about you either. No one who cares about ou could support your being pimped … and that includes you yourself.

Yes, I’m suggesting you don’t care for yourself. That has to change. You ought be protected as a precious young lady by anyone in your employ and anyone around you, including you. This is a dangerous world. We don’t encourage our daughters to walk around naked in it because it makes them prey for animals and less than animals, a distressing majority of whom work in the music industry and it’s associated media.
You are worth more than your body or your sexual appeal. The world of showbiz doesn’t see things that way, they like things to be seen the other way, whether they are magazines who want you on their cover, or whatever … Don’t be under any illusions … ALL of them want you because they’re making money off your youth and your beauty … which they could not do except for the fact your youth makes you blind to the evils of show business. If you have an innocent heart you can’t recognise those who do not.

I repeat, you have enough talent that you don’t need to let the music business make a prostitute of you. You shouldn’t let them make a fool of you either. Don’t think for a moment that any of them give a flying f**k about you. They’re there for the money… we’re there for the music. It has always been that way and it will always be that way. The sooner a young lady gets to know that, the sooner she can be REALLY in control.
You also said in Rolling Stone that your look is based on mine. The look I chose, I chose on purpose at a time when my record company were encouraging me to do what you have done. I felt I would rather be judged on my talent and not my looks. I am happy that I made that choice, not least because I do not find myself on the proverbial rag heap now that I am almost 47 yrs of age … which unfortunately many female artists who have based their image around their sexuality, end up on when they reach middle age.

Real empowerment of yourself as a woman would be to in future refuse to exploit your body or your sexuality in order for men to make money from you. I needn’t even ask the question … I’ve been in the business long enough to know that men are making more money than you are from you getting naked. Its really not at all cool. And its sending dangerous signals to other young women. Please in future say no when you are asked to prostitute yourself. Your body is for you and your boyfriend. It isn’t for every spunk-spewing dirtbag on the net, or every greedy record company executive to buy his mistresses diamonds with.

As for the shedding of the Hannah Montana image … whoever is telling you getting naked is the way to do that does absolutely NOT respect your talent, or you as a young lady. Your records are good enough for you not to need any shedding of Hannah Montana. She’s waaaaaaay gone by now … Not because you got naked but because you make great records.

Whether we like it or not, us females in the industry are role models and as such we have to be extremely careful what messages we send to other women. The message you keep sending is that its somehow cool to be prostituted … its so not cool Miley … its dangerous. Women are to be valued for so much more than their sexuality. We aren’t merely objects of desire. I would be encouraging you to send healthier messages to your peers … that they and you are worth more than what is currently going on in your career. Kindly fire any motherf**ker who hasn’t expressed alarm, because they don’t care about you.”

Israel is preparing to deport thousands of African migrants after striking a secret deal with Uganda.

                                                             

‘Uganda has a clear policy regarding refugees’

Israel's Haaretz newspaper reported on Friday that Israel would finance the migrants' flights to Uganda and their resettlement there, with each refugee apparently receiving $1 500 (about R15 400).

But Ugandan foreign affairs ministry spokesman Elly Kamahungye denied the deal.

“Is not true, it is unfounded, false and misleading that we have such an agreement,” Kamahungye told AFP.

“Uganda has a clear policy regarding refugees, on who comes in and who leaves, in line with international law, so it cannot be true in this case that we are receiving such people.”

The Israeli Government confirmed that the first of 50,000 Eritrean and Sudanese migrants would be sent to the East African nation after reports emerged suggesting that they had reached an agreement.

The terms of the deal have not been revealed, but Israeli media and opposition politicians suggested that it was agreed after Israel pledged to send money and weapons to Uganda.

Scottish government criticized for immigrants ad campaign

GLASGOW, Scotland, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Scotland's Home Office is getting more heat for its advertising targeting immigrants, with critics saying it "borders on racism."

In the latest flap, the Home Office placed posters in immigration reporting centers in Glasgow and elsewhere advising immigrants to "ask about going home" and offering to book flights for them, the British newspaper The Guardian reported Friday. The posters follow an earlier bus advertisement campaign that warned immigrants: "In the U.K. illegally? Go home or face arrest."

Business Secretary Vince Cable called the posters an offensive stunt and Sandra White, a member of the Scottish Parliament, said they are "totaling inappropriate and appalling."

"In my view the campaign borders on the racist," she said. "The posters are in an area where most people who go there are African or Asian and to my mind they are there to put fear into people."

The Herald Scotland reported the campaign started July 29 and is to run until Oct. 4. A Home Office spokesman said the campaign is "to ensure people know we can provide sensitive advice and assistance to help them return home with dignity."

Conn. taps into European Immigration and the Industrial Revolutions past to promote tourism

HARTFORD, Conn. — More than a century after waves of Europe’s working class left for jobs in New England mills and other prospects in the U.S., their homes, communities and traditions are providing fresh opportunities to promote tourism in Connecticut.

THE “OLD” IMMIGRATION

Connecticut’s population history is by no means unique; nevertheless it is startling to note the changes which have occurred in the make-up of the state’s citizenry in a century and a half. In the early nineteenth century, most of the state’s residents were of English birth or descent and were overwhelmingly Protestant. By 1910, nearly thirty percent of the population was foreign-born, and of that group, roughly fifty-five percent were from Southern and Eastern Europe. Seventeen percent alone were born in Italy. In 1980, 1,259,873 of Connecticut’s residents claimed ancestry from one of fifteen European nationalities. Persons of English and Scotch descent combined accounted for only 17.9 percent of the group. Nearly 1,700,000 more inhabitants claim descent from one of six mixed-European nationality groups. In addition, over 124,000 persons of Spanish origin and almost 19,000 residents of Asian and Pacific Island background live in Connecticut. Such a profound demographic transformation is of crucial significance for Connecticut’s teachers. Their students are the descendants of this diverse population growth.

The homogeneity and stability of Connecticut’s population in the Colonial and Early National Periods can be exaggerated. Connecticut’s population constantly received new immigrant infusions from England in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. And ethnic homogeneity did not preclude religious diversity. By 1770, the state’s Protestant churches included Congregational. Episcopal, Baptist, Presbyterian, and Lutheran congregations. Most Protestant dissenting sects were excused from attendance at Congregational services. But the dominance of the legendary Yankee of English stock is no myth. It has been estimated that at the time of the American Revolution over ninety-six percent of Connecticut’s population was either English-born or of English descent.

Irish, Italian, Lithuanian, French Canadian, Polish and other immigrants labored in factories that made silk in Manchester, thread in Willimantic, hats in Danbury and numerous other Connecticut mill towns in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Economic development officials now want to tell the immigrants’ stories to draw tourists.

Irish and German Immigration

Anti-Irish sentiment permeated the United States during the Industrial Revolution. The prejudice exhibited in advertisements like this one sometimes led to violent outbursts.

In the middle half of the nineteenth century, more than one-half of the population of IRELAND emigrated to the United States. So did an equal number of GERMANS. Most of them came because of civil unrest, severe unemployment or almost inconceivable hardships at home. This wave of immigration affected almost every city and almost every person in America. From 1820 to 1870, over seven and a half million immigrants came to the United States —

In Ireland almost half of the population lived on farms that produced little income. Because of their poverty, most Irish people depended on potatoes for food. When this crop failed three years in succession, it led to a great FAMINE with horrendous consequences. Over 750,000 people starved to death.

Initially costing $100,000, the project stems from an emerging marketing strategy known as cultural or ethnic tourism. With more than 100 heritage or cultural organizations, Connecticut has a strong base of support to launch a cultural tourism initiative, said Kip Bergstrom, deputy economic development commissioner.

Bergstrom said other Northeast states can similarly boast a history of ethnic and national groups, but Connecticut’s small size gives visitors the chance to see much in a compact state.

“We have the whole world represented in Connecticut,” he said

As states compete fiercely for tourist dollars, marketing officials are looking for any angle to promote their communities. In Connecticut, tourism generates about $11.5 billion in spending, $1.15 billion in state and local tax revenue and employs nearly 111,000 workers, according to 2011 statistics, the most recent.

Two phases are planned for Connecticut’s project. The first, which will extend through mid-June 2013, will document the historical links between people of various ethnic communities and their neighborhoods, buildings, shops and other sites.

The second phase will use the stories that have been developed to market communities in materials ranging from brochures to smartphone apps.

Mary Donohue, executive director of the Manchester Historical Society, said historic preservationists in Connecticut have worked with scholars to identify African-American historic sites and partnered with the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Hartford to identify historic synagogues, provide tours and highlight Jewish-owned farms and resorts. more from CBS

 The crime was very much of its time, said David King, who chronicled the hunt for Petiot in “Death in the City of Light.”

“Paris was not a good place to be. A lot of people were trying to leave Paris, a lot of people just disappearing. He had it plotted out, a very devious plan,” said King, in a telephone interview.

“Respect for the law was tarnished under the Nazis. Even if you suspected something, a lot of people were very, very reluctant to go forward, especially if they were Jewish.”

Petiot, as it turned out, was a respected physician who turned serial killer by night, preying largely on Jews desperate to leave Paris by luring them in with promises of escape. He was accused of murdering “only” some 27, but authorities suspected his real toll was far higher.

King, a former history professor, first stumbled across reference to the killings while browsing in a bookstore and picking up a World War Two memoir by a spy. At first, he couldn’t believe what he read.

But the grisly details stuck with him, and after he confirmed the story was true, he finished his other projects and came back to it.

“Here’s a guy — Marcel Petiot, who was accused of all the murders. Obviously very intelligent, charismatic, has a respected position, is into collecting antiques, interested in the arts,” he said.

“And yet, you get to the other side, when he’s accused of some of the most disturbing things you can think of: savagely dismembering bodies.”

Through years of research, including perusal of Parisian police archives closed since the crimes took place, King pieced together the story of how Petiot claimed to be a member of the resistance and lured many of his victims in by promising them safe passage to South America in return for payment.

“It’s a microcosm of the whole Nazi terror and Paris being a bad place to be. There’s got to be more than just exploiting peoples’ hopes and dreams and desperation, but that’s what he does,” King said.

Though Petiot eluded police on at least one occasion, after appearing amid the crowd that gathered after the initial grisly discovery and speaking with a patrolman before riding off on his bicycle, he was eventually captured, tried and executed.more

The Gestapo had sniffed him out too late in the war to do anything about him, but its judgment that Petiot was a “dangerous lunatic” actually turned out to bolster the deranged doctor’s case that he was an anti-fascist.more

Israeli Prime Minister Is a Liar, French President Sarkozy Tells Obama

The handful of reporters included one from the Reuters news agency who confirmed the quotes.

“By the time the team from the Elysee [presidential palace] realized, it must have been three minutes,” one of the journalists told Arret Sur Images.

Reporters who overheard the remarks decided not to report them because they were intended to be private, but the news leaked out on the Internet nonetheless.

“We didn’t record anything and using them [the comments] would admit that we cheated,” an anonymous reporter told the website.

It also quoted another member of the media saying, “there were discussions among the journalists there who decided not to do anything. It’s a sensitive subject: it’s annoying to not publish this information, but at the same time we have agreed to precise ethical rules and printing these sentences would mean violating them.”

Netanyahu’s office declined ABC News’ request for comment and the White House has yet to respond.

Sarkozy and Obama were discussing the recent admission of Palestine to UNESCO, part of its bid to get recognition at the United Nations. The U.S. opposes the Palestinian efforts and Obama was reportedly chiding Sarkozy for not telling him France would vote in favor of Palestine in the UNESCO vote. The U.S. later withdrew its funding for the cultural body which amounts to $70 million annually.
