Craig Cobb hospitalized after hunger strike

North Dakota white supremacist Craig Cobb has been taken from jail to a hospital after refusing to eat while in custody. According to KXNE News, Cobb has been in custody for nine days after he and another man menaced neighbors and threatened them with guns.
Cobb came to national attention earlier this year for wanting to transform the town of Leith, North Dakota into a racist enclave, but was foiled by zoning laws.
He then went on national television and found out that he is, in fact, of mixed Caucasian and African-American descent. In the wake of that humiliating episode he returned to his home in North Dakota and found that it had been defaced with racist graffiti.
After that, a dispute with members of the Leith city council and other townspeople escalated to the point that Cobb and fellow neo-Nazi Kynan Dutton armed themselves with rifles and followed the other residents around in an attempt to terrorize and intimidate them. Both men were arrested on Saturday, Nov. 16.
Since then, Cobb has refused to eat, claiming he is engaging in an exercise in spiritual enlightenment that will culminate in his death. When jail personnel became concerned about his health, Cobb was taken to a clinic in Beulah, ND. The clinicians referred him to the state hospital.  >>more from Raw Story<<

In Another Brilliant Statement from Al not so Sharpton:Blames Racism for 3/4 Killers and Victims Being Black

If you’re black, you are almost 25 times more likely to be shot in New York City than a white person — and you are also more likely to be arrested for pulling a trigger, alarming new NYPD statistics show.
Data collected during the first six months of the year reveal 74% of the city’s 567 shooting victims were black. An additional 21.5% were Hispanic. Less than 3% of shooting victims were white, according to the report.
Who’s to blame for this? If you’re Al Sharpton, the answer is obvious. Police racism.

Black community activists said the frustrating statistics, which have barely fluctuated since 2009, tell the stark stories of economics in poorer neighborhoods and the NYPD’s laser-like focus on communities of color.
Wait… so black people are shooting other black people because of the NYPD’s focus on black communities? That’s exactly right.
“Many of us have struggled with crimes in our own communities, but clearly we have to question the records,” the Rev. Al Sharpton told the Daily News on Tuesday. “It’s no surprise that you get more results in a community you are concentrating on.”
So that must mean there are a whole lot of white people shooting other white people in New York that the NYPD doesn’t even know about because it’s too busy stopping and frisking project dwellers in Brownsville.

If the NYPD were to focus on protecting white neighborhoods. It would be racist. When it focuses on protecting black neighborhoods, it’s racist and somehow responsible for all the shootings, which it’s not allowed to stop, because liberals decided Stop and Frisk is racist.  <>

Revolt of the Maccabees, Column one: Israel, the Pilgrims and the Maccabees and Mel Gibson~

Revolt of the Maccabees

The Jewish revolt against the Greeks sets a precedent as the world's first religious war.
We know the details of the Jewish fight against the Greeks and Hellenism from the two Books of the Maccabees as well as the writings of the Jewish historian Josephus.

Zeus and Greek Gods

Tthe Greeks took their gods as seriously as we take the stock market.

by Rabbi Shimon Apisdorf

These chronicles are not included in the Hebrew Bible because the Great Assembly had decided many years earlier what the Bible should consist of and these events occurred much later in time. The Books of the Maccabees were both written in the first century BCE. I Maccabees was originally written in Hebrew as an official court history for the Hasmonean Dynasty. II Maccabees was originally written in Greek and based on earlier work written by Jason of Cyrene.

This revolt of the Jews sets a precedent in human history. It is the world's first ideological/religious war. No one in the ancient world died for their gods; only the Jews thought that their religion – the only monotheistic religion at the time – was worth dying for.

But it is not just a war against the Greeks, it is also a civil war – Jews, who were loyal to Judaism, fighting other Jews, who had become Hellenized and who were siding with the Greeks.

The year is 167 BCE and the horrible persecution of Judaism by the Greeks is in full swing. The Greek troops show up in the town of Modi'in (a site west of Jerusalem which you can visit today off the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway) and demand that the Jews there sacrifice a pig to the Greek gods. The elder of the town, Mattathias, who is a kohen, that is of the priestly class, refuses.

But there is a Hellenized Jew in the town who is willing to do what is unspeakable in Jewish eyes. As he's about to sacrifice the pig, Mattathias stabs him, also killing the Greek official present. He then turns to the crowd and announces: "Follow me, all of you who are for God's law and stand by the covenant." (1-Maccabees 2:27)

Even if all the nations that live under the rule of the king obey him, and have chosen to do his commandments, departing each one from the religion of his fathers, yet I and my sons and my brothers will live by the covenant of our fathers...We will not obey the king's word by turning aside from our religion to the right hand or to the left. (1-Maccabees 2:19-22)

Maccabee Cartoon

Maccabee Cartoon Photo: Avi Katz
Back in October 2001 then prime minister, Ariel Sharon, raised the hackles of the White House when he warned the United States, “Do not try to appease the Arabs at our expense. We cannot accept this.” Sharon then invoked the 1938 Munich Pact. As he put it, “Don’t repeat the terrible mistakes of 1938, when the enlightened democracies in Europe decided to sacrifice Czechoslovakia for a comfortable, temporary solution.”

Israel, he said, “will not be Czechoslovakia.”

Sharon was sharply rebuked not only by the White House, but by leading American supporters of Israel. They attacked him for daring to make the comparison. In time, with the US invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq, Sharon’s warning was largely forgotten.

The question of whether George W. Bush sought to appease the Arabs and Iran at Israel’s expense is an open one. Strong arguments can be made on both sides of the issue. On the one hand, Bush took the fight to terror supporting regimes.

On the other hand, Bush refused to face the threat of Iran. And he forced Israel to remain trapped in the two-state paradigm which requires it to make unreciprocated concessions to Palestinian terrorists working towards its destruction.

While Bush’s legacy remains uncertain, what is absolutely certain is that his successor Barack Obama is seeking to appease the Iranians and other Islamist forces at Israel’s expense. The appeasement Sharon accused Bush of contemplating has become the official policy of the US government under Obama.

In the haze of accusations and counteraccusations by opponents and supporters of Obama’s new pact with the mullahs of Tehran, it bears recalling that the problem with the Munich pact was not the agreement in and of itself. If Adolf Hitler had been a credible actor, then the agreement might have made sense.

But Hitler was not a credible actor.   >>More from JP<<

It goes without saying that Mel Gibson was once one of the biggest movie stars and directors in the world. He was the man that somehow turned The Passion of the Christ into an enormous box office success.

Here’s three films the once A list Mel Gibson planned on making before or during one of his many meltdowns that just won’t be happening anytime soon.

3. The Maccabees

the macabee

The Maccabees actually seemed really likely for awhile. Many thought it would double as both a comeback epic film from the Braveheart director and an apology to the Jewish community. However, things went very wrong and very fast.
The film was meant to celebrate Judah Maccabee: a man celebrated as one of the greatest Jewish military figures. He led the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire. The holiday of Hanukkah is actually partly thanks to the man. The holiday celebrates the restoration of Jewish worship in Jerusalem. That restoration was thanks to Judah Maccabee and his revolt. The film was said to follow said revolt. It sounded like the perfect plot for the man that directed Braveheart and Apocalypto. You know, besides the whole Jewish aspect.

2. Beserker

dicaprio viking
When it was first announced, it seemed like a fantastic idea. Mel Gibson was going to direct a real viking movie. He was going to make a hardcore, bloody viking movie. He had the expertise thanks to Braveheart and Apacolypto, but once Gibson’s first tape got released (after the first DUI meldown), the movie fell apart just as quickly as Maccabees.
Leonardo DiCaprio dropped the project immediately (he was going to lead the picture) and Gibson got left without a studio. The film still sounds like a great idea, but there’s no way Gibson will be able to get the artistic freedom or budgets he got before for historical epics like he did before. Despite this, however, Gibson still claims that Beserker remains in development as well…

1. Lethal Weapon 5

mel gibson lethal weapon 5
This one is the saddest of all because who doesn’t love Lethal Weapon? It was the movie that made many fall in love with Gibson and the buddy cop genre in the first place.
The franchise is extremely profitable and for a while a fifth film seemed to be chugging along, but it fell apart for completely different reasons. According to some reports, the studio wanted original screenwriter Shane Black to direct from a script he wrote. Gibson disagreed and wanted longtime collaborator Richard Donner directing based on a story Donner developed. With no agreement made, the movie fell apart.

Salvation Army says “Gays Need to Be Put to Death”

sa cover
Major Bruce Harmer, the Army’s Communications and Public Relations Secretary recently issued the following statement;
“The Salvation Army encompasses a diverse community with a wide range of opinions on human sexuality and other subjects. The senior leadership of The Salvation Army continues to reflect on Christian and Biblical tradition, and especially on the themes of  justice and mercy, to further deepen the understandings of our own members and build a more healthy relationship with the LGBTQ community. We pledge to continue to offer services to all and to treat each person with dignity, respect and non-discrimination.”

Christmas, it is the time of the year for holiday shopping, and also hearing the bell ringers for the Salvation Army collection donations. Those donations provide Christmas dinners, clothing, and Christmas toys for children in need. The charity collects millions of dollars in donations every year, and they distribute it to needy families, seniors, and the homeless in keeping with the spirit of the holiday season.
The Salvation Army has expressed their Christian beliefs in the past, stating that they do not accept the LGBTQ lifestyle, nor do they stand up for gay marriage. Salvation Army went on record recently, stating that LGBTQ parents should be put to death as the bible instructs. Major Andrew Craibe, a Salvation Army Media Relations Director, went on public radio hosted by journalist Serena Ryan, to discuss a recent call by LGBTQ parents for a boycott of the nonprofit for its anti-gay policies and beliefs.
Ryan questioned Craibe about Salvation Story: Salvationist Handbook of Doctrine, the manual used to train Salvation sa1Army “soldiers” and members. Several chapters refer to the sin of homosexuality, including a section that cites Romans 1:18-32, which includes a admonition that homosexuals “deserved to die”;
“ Ryan: According to the Salvation Army gay parents deserve death. How do you respond to that, as part of your doctrine?”
“Craibe: Well, that’s a part of our belief system.”
Ryan: So they should die.”
“Craibe: You know, we have an alignment to the Scriptures, but that’s our belief.”
“Ryan: You’re proposing in your doctrine that because these parents are gay, that they must die.”
“Craibe: Well, well, because that is part of our Christian doctrine “
“Ryan: But how is that Christian? Shouldn’t it be about love?”
sa5“Craibe: Well, the love that we would show is about that: consideration for all human beings to come to know salvation…”
“Ryan Or die…”
“Craibe: Well, yes.”

The salvation is willing to take the money from the LGBTQ community, but they aren’t willing to support them. I remember reading a story a year or two ago about the salvation army not supporting the LGBTQ community, so I stopped supporting them. That red bucket they put out every year for Christmas, depends on people like us, to put money in it. They are a charity that depends on donations to help the families in need.sa3
I think it is horrible that a charity admits they think LGBTQ parents should die.

Why is the FDA cracking down on home genetic test$? ' Ashkenazi Jews Genetic Test Panel.' nuff said

Why is the FDA cracking down on home genetic tests? | Yahoo Health

In a move likely to heighten a longstanding controversy about DNA tests for health risks, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered home genetic test maker 23andMe to “immediately discontinue” marketing its saliva collection kit and Personal Genome Service, charging that the company has made claims not backed with solid science.
The FDA warning letter contends that the Google-backed company has failed to show that its $99 test—which claims to check one’s risk for hundreds of diseases and conditions—is safe or effective. The regulators also point out that there could be potential for serious harm if the 23ndme test didn’t work as advertised.
“For instance, if the BRCA-related risk assessment for breast or ovarian cancer reports a false positive, it could lead a patient to undergo prophylactic surgery, chemoprevention, intensive screening, or other morbidity-inducing actions,” the letter states, “while a false negative could result in a failure to recognize an actual risk that may exist.”
In this scenario, if a woman was mistakenly told that she was a carrier of a BRCA1 or BRCA2 genetic mutation that put her at very high risk for breast and ovarian cancer, she might opt for an unnecessary preventive double mastectomy or undergo surgical removal of her ovaries, ending her fertility.
Also alarming is the possibility that women who are genuinely at high risk for these cancers (like Angelina Jolie) might be left dangerously in the dark if the DNA test incorrectly said they were not carriers of BRCA mutations.
It's easy to see the appeal of a simple home test that will uncover lots of interesting facts about your body and predict your risk of disease. But right now, it seems those tests are largely overhyped and can actually threaten your health by giving you false information.
Medically supervised genetic testing (performed in a doctor's office) is still a viable and accurate way to assess health risks for certain patients, but the at-home "direct-to-consumer" tests have been under fire since they hit the market.

A Lack of "Scientific Validity"

The FDA’s action comes after years of controversy about the accuracy of at-home genetic tests—also known as direct-to-consumer (DTC) tests—for health risks, which are offered online by such companies as DNA DTCDNATraits, and GenePlanet.
One of these firms, DNATraits, had issues with the FDA in 2010, in connection with its Ashkenazi Jews Genetic Test Panel. At the time, 14 makers of genetic tests also received FDA letters, as part of a crackdown that also included an earlier warning to 23andme.
The Federal Trade Commission has long warned consumers that “some [DTC tests] lack scientific validity, and others provide medical results that are meaningful only in the context of a full medical evaluation.”

Genetic Testing Facilities and Cost
Last modified on September 17, 2012 at 6:55 pmLeer esta página en español

Testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 is usually done on a blood sample taken in your doctor’s office and sent to a commercial laboratory or a research testing facility. Most people have it done by a commercial lab. During testing, the genes are separated from the rest of the DNA, and then they are scanned for abnormalities.

Often, the type of genetic testing that's done and the specific genes being tested dictate whether testing in a research setting is possible. Research labs tend to perform free and anonymous testing. But they may provide limited results or require multiple family members to participate. In addition, testing results may not be available for many months or years, and sometimes they're not available at all.

In the United States, Myriad Genetics performs all commercial BRCA1 and BRCA2 testing. They report results within a month. (Abnormalities in other genes have been associated with breast cancer risk. Right now, these appear to be a less common cause of breast cancer than BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations, although research is ongoing. If you want to be screened for those, talk to your doctor and genetic counselor about where to be tested.) The cost of the BRCA test ranges from about $300 to $3,000, depending on whether you get the limited test, in which only a few areas of the gene are evaluated, or the full test, in which hundreds of areas are examined on both genes.

In 1988, the U.S. Congress passed the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) to ensure quality standards and the accuracy and reliability of results across all testing laboratories. Genetic testing should be performed by a CLIA-approved facility. (Myriad Genetics is CLIA-approved.)

Irish Citizens Stand Against Muslim Invasion

Many Muslims in Ireland are shocked by a letter posted to schools and mosques declaring a war against them. They should be shocked that it has taken as long as it has for people across the world to start standing up against their campaign of intimidation.

Gutless politicians don’t stand with the people anymore. In seemingly every country across the globe, the political positions are occupied by self-serving, pandering wimps. This letter is clearly born out of a frustration with a lack of positive action on the part of government officials and a willingness of the Irish to defend their nation by taking matters into their own hands. After all, the people are the ones who are chiefly affected, not the bureaucrats.
The anonymous letter has made the rounds of Muslim schools and mosques in Dublin.
While the Muslim groups have and will try to negatively label it otherwise, it is a call to arms for the Irish citizens to recognize the impact of the invasion and the deliberate efforts to supplant the Irish people, their culture, and their traditions with Islam and Sharia law.
The language of the letter is described as intimidating and extremely violent. The obvious neglect to mention the Islamic violence is so outlandish that it is barely deserving of a comment.  >>more<<

Common Core ‘architect’ David Coleman’s history with Bill Ayers and Barack Obama

CHICAGO – Referred to as ‘Common Core lead standards authors’ by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), David Coleman and Jason Zimba are just two in a long list of Common Core creators whose academic roots are with the education-for-a-revolution machine borne by Annenberg Institute, Carnegie Corporation, Bill Gates, et al.

INVITATION FOR SUBMISSIONS The New York State Education Department (NYSED) is seeking, from educators and other service providers at all levels of New York’s educational system, submissions of curriculum content for Grades 9-12 English Language Arts (ELA) that support rigor, quality, and alignment in the implementation of the New York State Common Core Learning Standards, and that are based on texts that have been chosen by NYSED for a contract to create a set of 9-12 ELA modules.  Background As part of the Regents Reform Agenda, New York State is leading the way in articulating rigor, quality, and alignment in school and classroom materials and practice associated with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in grades P-12 in English language arts (ELA). By the fall of 2013, grades K-12 will be in full implementation of the new standards.

david colemanToday, Coleman and Zimba are head of Student Achievement Partners, an organization that played a leading role in developing the standards and actively supports districts and states in implementing them.
Prior to Student Achiement Partners, Coleman and Zimba were co-founders of the Grow Network (now owned by McGraw-Hill Company). Grow Network began as a pilot program in New York in 2000. Less than a year later, the Chicago Public Education Fund began negotiating a contract with Grow Network on behalf of Chicago Public Schools.
The Chicago Public Education Fund (‘The Fund’) was createdin 1998 by the Chicago Annenberg Challenge (CAC) board of directors, which included Barack Obama as board chairman and communist Bill Ayers, as co-chair.
President Obama’s recently appointed Commerce Secretary, Penny Pritzker, was one of twelve founding board members appointed to The Fund.
Obama himself worked with The Fund for the next several years as a leadership council member, alongside Bill Ayers’ father, Thomas Ayers, and brother, John Ayers.
From Catalyst Chicago, March 2000:
“The Chicago Annenberg Challenge will close up shop in June 2001, but its efforts to improve public education will live on through a new community foundation…the Chicago Public Education Fund…  >>more from EAG<<

Buckeye Firearms Association: Go comment on this Toledo Blade Editorial - Kill it: Ohio’s ‘stand your ground’ bill would invite violence and go far beyond traditional legal immunity

The Republican-controlled Ohio House of Representatives has approved a bill that would modify the state’s concealed-weapons law to expand greatly the circumstances in which Ohioans can shoot to kill. The Senate should reject this unnecessary and risky measure, which would make Ohio the 23rd state with so-called stand-your-ground gun laws.
Opponents, some of whom protested during the House session last week when the measure was passed, call the legislation the “kill-at-will bill” and the “George Zimmerman bill,” after the Florida man who shot and killed an unarmed teenager but was acquitted in July.
On both sides of this issue, the rhetoric has become heated and hyperbolic. This is not a kill-at-will bill, but the measure would invite more gun violence and potentially embolden people to use it — something this state and its communities do not need.
Ohio laws already give wide latitude to people who use lethal force to protect themselves, stating that they need not retreat in their homes or cars. These spots are, arguably, areas of personal domain to which American legal tradition and the “castle doctrine” have extended special protections and immunities.
But the House bill would extend certain immunities, without cause and with great risk, to anywhere a person has a legal right to be. That would give a virtual green light to violence and vigilantism.
It’s not uncommon for people to overreact to potential danger, especially when they must make split-second decisions. People who happen to feel threatened, even by an unarmed person, should not feel as though they have a license to kill.
City councils in several Ohio communities, including Toledo, Akron, Dayton, and Cincinnati, oppose the House bill. So do the Fraternal Order of Police and the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police. Members of the Ohio Student Association also have protested it.
The record of states with stand-your-ground laws — sometimes called “shoot first” or “make my day” measures — justifies some fears. A recent Texas A&M study found that these states showed a “statistically significant 8 percent net increase in the number of reported murders and non-negligent manslaughters,” without decreasing incidents of burglary, robbery, or aggravated assault.
Gun control has preoccupied and divided the nation since the slaughter of 26 people, including 20 children, in Newtown, Conn., in December. The senseless death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was another tipping point in the national debate on guns and gun control, especially stand-your-ground laws.
Yet despite the desire of most Americans — and Ohioans — for reasonable restrictions on gun use, a fervid minority keeps pushing for even greater latitude in the use of deadly force. Ohio’s people, and their elected officials, must decide what kind of community and state they want to live in.
Ohio laws that justify the use of lethal force for self-protection are more than adequate. The stand-your-ground bill is unnecessary and unsafe. Kill it.

Education students say prof’s grammar and spelling corrections a sign of racial hostility

The Art of Spelling And Telling Time, Lost! When Is ‘Enuf is enuf’

Remember when MTV came out and the first video they played was ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’, by The Buggles?   I do!

Since the creation of MTV amongst other things so much has been lost.  How much further can America and  the world be dumb ed down.  I know speaking from growing up in the MTV generation and seeing for myself the dumbing down  take place.  What happened to being able to read a clock with hands is gone to the ‘digital’, along with many other things and the article below is just one more nail in the coffin of intelligence.

statue face palmLOS ANGELES – A group of 25 University of California at Los Angeles students – who are studying to be future teachers, school leaders and university professors – recently staged a sit-in to protest one professor’s acts of “micro-aggression” against minority students, which include correcting grammar, spelling and documentation mistakes on writing assignments.

The protest group, known as UCLA Call 2 Action: Graduate Students of Color, is also upset that education professor Val Rust – whose classroom last week’s sit-in took place – has questioned the value of some minority students’ research work “on social identity and the related dynamics of oppression, power and privilege,” reports InsideHigherEd.com.
In an interview with InsideHigherEd.com, protest spokesman and Ph.D. candidate Kenjus Watson said some inside the graduate program (he would not specifically name Rust) have questioned his research project about black men and micro-aggressions in higher education as “too subjective.”
Watson also explained the unnamed professor marked as incorrect a student’s purposeful decision to capitalize the first letter in the word “Indigenous” all throughout her research paper.
“Watson said that correction disregarded the writer’s scholarly advocacy and had other ‘ideological implications,’” the news site reports.
A statement issued by the protest group listed other complaints, including an incident in which Rust tried to stop a heated classroom discussion about critical race theory by shaking Watson’s arm.
According to Watson, an African American, Rust’s decision to make physical contact with a student was not only wrong, but it carried additional racial implications because it involved an older white male “patronizing” a younger black man, the news site adds.  >>more<<

Craig Cobb Refusing Food In ND Jail

White Supremacist Refusing Food In ND Jail « CBS Minnesota

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A white supremacist who was arrested on charges of terrorizing a small North Dakota town that he wants to take over has been refusing food.
Monday was the fourth day that Craig Cobb refused to eat at the Mercer County Jail in Stanton, where he was being held without bail, prosecutor Todd Schwarz said. Cobb has not given authorities any indication why he is refusing to eat. Officials are monitoring him and have made no decision on how to proceed.
“He’s in no medical distress, and he hasn’t been causing any troubles,” Schwarz said.
Cobb, who is taking water, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview from jail that he is not on a hunger strike to protest his imprisonment — though he does feel he is wrongly accused — but is instead practicing mahasamadhi, a form of spiritual enlightenment in which the physical body is permanently left behind. Cobb said that will happen for him at yuletide, another term for Christmas.
Cobb would not go so far as to say he plans to die.
“This is not the only realm, or plane of existence,” he said.
Cobb said he decided on his course of action to raise awareness that “any nascent white movement will be crushed.” He also said he considers himself a martyr.

Fort Hood 'Shooter/Killer' Islamist Nidal Hasan; Beaten in Prison.

Due to political correctness and the fear of offending his Islamic beliefs, Hasan was allowed to wear his beard, an act in and of itself which made a mockery of the U.S. legal system, after he murdered 13 soldiers at Fort Hood in Texas in 2009. The act would be the largest terrorist attack on a U.S. base, had Hasan’s actions not been labeled “work place violence” by a politically correct U.S. President Barack Hussein Obama administration that feared payout damages to victim’s families had the act been labelled an act of terror.
Hasan, a Muslim, claimed he was killing U.S. soldiers set to deploy to Afghanistan to protect his fellow Muslims, but the politically correct U.S. government did not want to be confused with such facts, because they had their minds already made up. Work place violence! Leave it alone!

If Hasan thought he was having a bad day when he had his beard forcibly shaven when he entered prison, his concept of a bad day got worse last week when, according to rumors coming out of Leavenworth, he had been beaten by three other inmates.
According to the rumors, three of Hasan’s fellow inmates set upon Hasan and beat him profusely while guards were “busy” looking away while transferring him from a religious service of his choosing back to his cell. It is alleged that he is suffering from a broken nose and several facial lacerations. The rumors are yet to be confirmed by the prison.

ummmm, shouldn't the UN worry about something other then destroying another White Holiday/Tradition?

UN investigators threatened after calling for an end to black-faced Dutch Christmas character Zwarte Piet

United Nations investigators have been threatened and insulted in the Netherlands after calling for an end to one of the country’s most beloved traditions — Zwarte Piet, or Black Pete.

The black-faced, curly-wig wearing, red-lipped character has been helping Sinterklaas, or Santa Claus, hand out presents to Dutch children for hundreds of years. About 600 Black Petes turned out last Sunday at the annual Amsterdam Sinterklaas parade.

But some see him as a racist character who is becoming increasingly controversial.
This week, Verene Shepherd, head of a UN working group investigating whether Black Pete is racist, called for the character to be abolished.
“The working party cannot understand why the Dutch cannot see that [the Zwarte Piet character] is a return to slavery and that this festival must stop in the 21st century,” she said on the Dutch TV program EenVandaag.
“If I, as a black person, were to live in the Netherlands, I would have objections,” added Ms. Shepherd, who comes from Jamaica.

The Dutch have taken exception to the UN investigation. Local media report widespread support for Black Pete and a Facebook page set up in praise of him has received almost two million “likes.”
