Ohio executes inmate with 1-drug lethal injection

Biros was sent to death row in 1991 for killing and dismembering the body of 22-year-old Tami Engstrom, leaving her body parts scattered in parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Ohio executed a killer Tuesday by performing the nation’s first lethal injection using a single drug, a supposedly less painful method than previous executions that required three drugs. The execution team seemed to struggle with shunts in Biros’ arms to intravenously inject the drugs, taking about 30 minutes and pricking the condemned man at least a half-dozen times. Struggles by Ohio’s execution teams to find suitable veins in other recent executions and attempts, including in September when Gov. Ted Strickland was forced to step in and stop attempts to execute Cleveland’s Romell Broom, has drawn national scrutiny and legal trouble for Ohio.
