So who winds up paying for accidents 'Illegals' cause and what should or can we do about it?

DRIVING ILLEGAL

After the post I put up last night concerning California and them not towing unlicensed driver, mainly 'Illegal Immigrants' I decided to look into it further.....so here goes!

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — It was just another suburban fender-bender. A car zoomed into an intersection and braked too late to stop at a red light. The Georgia woman driving it, an American citizen, left with a wrecked auto, a sore neck and a traffic fine.
But for Felipa Leonor Valencia, the Mexican woman who was driving the Jeep that was hit that day in March, the damage went far beyond a battered bumper. The crash led Ms. Valencia, an illegal immigrant who did not have a valid driver’s license, to 12 days in detention and the start of deportation proceedings — after 17 years of living in Georgia.
Like Ms. Valencia, an estimated 4.5 million illegal immigrants nationwide are driving regularly, most without licenses, according to an analysis by The New York Times. Only three states — New Mexico, Utah and Washington — currently issue licenses without proof of legal residence in the United States.
Many states have adopted tough new laws to prevent illegal immigrants from driving, while expanding immigration enforcement by the state and local police.

ILLEGAL ALIENS ARE NATION'S MOST LETHAL DRIVERS    Author: The Editors

In this six-in-a-series of FSM reports on the horrors of illegal immigration, we must point out again that the people who pay for all the multi-millions of dollars in medical expenses due to these accidents are we, the citizens of the United States. So the next time you want to complain to your Congressperson about spiraling medical and health costs, look no further than the illegal alien community, and insist that we deport these perpetrators asap. If you??™d like to complain starting right now, we invite you to do so - at the end of this article you will find the link you??™ll need.

It is worth noting that illegal alien drivers are not only killing Americans and themselves. Some of the most horrific accidents are as a result of an illegal alien transporting other illegal aliens. For a few examples, see: Van stuffed full of immigrants takes deadly roll or 9 suspected illegal immigrants killed in Yuma crash or Driver in Crash Held on Smuggling Counts. In the first two incidents there were 21 illegal aliens in the accident vehicles. In the third there were ???only??? 11 in the van, with four dying. The medical costs on the local community for such accidents are enormous.
Who pays for the carnage? American citizens, of course. As noted in When illegal immigrants crash, taxpayers usually foot the bill,???the only trauma center in Southern Arizona, Tucson's University Medical Center??¦At the current run rate we'll incur 5 - 6 million dollars in un-reimbursed costs for taking care of foreign nationals.??? That is just the unpaid emergency medical costs for one hospital in one city. Since there is no such thing as a free lunch, the insured pay for the treated uninsured through higher medical costs and insurance premiums.

Can illegal immigrants get auto insurance?

There are many legal, ethical, and political debates centering around this fact, and one of these concerns the rights of these undocumented immigrants to obtain drivers’ licenses and car insurance. While it might seem obvious that a person with no legal status in the United States should not be granted the privilege of a drivers’ license or car insurance, in reality many states and insurance companies are coming to realize that this is not a practical approach. Undocumented immigrants come to the United States primarily to secure jobs. Having employment, they are of necessity often driving back and forth to work, and if they cannot obtain a license and insurance, they will often drive without them.
While this is illegal activity, the fact remains that many states do not have the law enforcement personnel or the jail space to process the many cases that they see every day. Being unable to enforce the law makes it more likely that people will continue to break it, and a vicious cycle is born.
Further, when an undocumented alien causes a car accident, the victim’s insurance company often has to pay for the damage under the uninsured motorists’ section of the policy. This costs insurance companies a great deal of money every year, which is passed on to the insured consumers in the form of higher premiums. This is obviously unfair to those who have insurance.

McCain: Illegal immigrants intentionally cause car accidents  By John Byrne   Wednesday, April 21, 2010

Sen. John McCain has taken a hard turn to the right.
In an appearance on The O’Reilly Factor, McCain threw his support behind what appears to be the nation’s stiffest immigration law in Arizona — and even took it one step farther.
McCain said that undocumented immigrants are a threat to American citizens because they are intentionally causing car accidents.

Until the federal government determines what to do about the massive numbers of undocumented aliens, it will remain up to the states to craft their own laws and regulations regarding these people. It is also up to each insurance company to determine their own policies regarding undocumented workers. About 40 insurance companies currently offer some type of program for undocumented immigrants, primarily those operating in California, Florida, and other states with high immigrant populations.
There are several ways insurance companies offer insurance to undocumented aliens. First, if the person cannot legally get a drivers’ license in his or her state, the person is put into a “high risk” pool of auto insurance candidates. These are people who are difficult to insure and pay the highest premiums. If the undocumented workers pay the stiff premiums demanded for insurance, they will have liability and minimal coverage if they are involved in an accident. The issue of driving without a license is handled by the local law enforcement authorities, and the person can still be arrested for driving without proper licensing, even if he or she has insurance.
Just a bit of randomness....I guess that accounts for so many car accidents in my City....?

Answer

"Sub-Saharan Africa - According to the "WHO", Ethiopia has the highest rate of fatalities per vehicle in the world. Uganda ranks second in road fatality rates in the world behind Ethiopia. Emergency medical systems are often poor and injury prevention programmes are rarely available." Please note this says "Per Vehicle". Strangly enough, the snowy countries of the Nordics, (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden) seem to have the lowest death rate.

It is true that Illegal immigrants and uninsured drivers contribute to the price citizens pay. Even more tragically are the numbers of people injured or killed each year. We can do something about this but nobody seems interested. I wrote a book that offers solutions to these problems (American Highway Roulette) but I can't get anybody interested in the topic.

Denton, thank you for your comment. I'm very interested in learning more about your book, and yes more people need to be interested in this. An loaded gun takes less lives then the more deadly weapon of a moving vehicle.

I honestly think more people could and would be more interested in this topic and would somehow show more interest and perhaps ban together to help.
