Interracial Homicide Rate Growing (Black on White) – Intra-Racial Killings Down In Last 3 Decades

The slaying of Trayvon Martin in Florida and the recent shooting spree of five blacks in Oklahoma are part of a broader, but little-noticed, change in how Americans kill each other.

The rate of interracial murder is growing.

Over the past 30 years, black-on-white murders rose from 6 percent of all homicides to 8 percent, according to a study of 550,000 homicide reports assembled by Scripps Howard News Service from FBI and local police reports. White-on-black killings rose from 3 to 4 percent. All other racial combinations rose from 3 to 5 percent.

“There haven’t been a lot of studies done on this. But we do have racial groups mixing together more than they used to, so it makes sense that there would be more homicides across race,” said University of Florida Law School professor Katheryn Russell-Brown, author of “The Color of Crime.”

The overwhelming majority of homicides are still intra-racial — whites killing whites or blacks killing blacks. But these killings have fallen from 88 percent of all reported violent deaths in the 1980s to 83 percent from 2000 to 2009.

The rise in the percentage of interracial homicides has occurred while the total number of homicides has fallen dramatically in recent years.

Intra-racial killings have plummeted. White-on-white slayings tumbled from 63,704 deaths in the 1980s to 46,179 deaths in the 10-year period from 2000 to 2009. Black-on-black killings dropped from 56,931 to 41,457 deaths during the same periods.

Black-on-white killings grew from 8,503 to 8,530, while white-on-black slayings dropped from 4,745 to 4,380. Homicides involving all other racial combinations, including Asians and American Indians, rose from 3,854 to 4,981.

These black-on-white or white-on-black killings are especially likely to occur in large urban states like Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York. Contrary to popular stereotypes, interracial killings are relatively rare in rural Deep South states, occurring at a rate well below the national average.

Several crime experts agreed this rise reflects increasing social contact between Americans of different races occurring in many, but not all, communities.More from source

The parents of two British students murdered in Florida have criticised President Barack Obama for his lack of compassion over their sons’ deaths.

They spoke out as teenager Shawn Tyson began a life sentence after being found guilty of the murder of James Cooper and James Kouzaris last April.

The 17 year old, who shot the men as they begged for their lives, will die in prison.

His conviction of first degree murder carries an mandatory life sentence without the chance of parole.

The powerfully built teen even looked bored as emotional DVD presentations about the dead men prepared by their grieving parents were shown in court.

Tyson, who has the word ‘Savage’ tattooed across his chest didn’t show a flicker of emotion, slumping in his seat as he was forced to watch a montage of photos showing the victims from early childhood to young men.

Two close friends of the dead men who had attended the eight day trial in Sarasota, Florida. had also delivered highly emotional impact statements to the court prior to the sentencing.

Paul Davies and Joe Hallett spoke of the “living hell” they and others who knew the men had suffered since the murders.

During the eight day trial they had been shown graphic crime scene and autopsy photos shown in court.

Later speaking after Tyson was jailed Davies and Hallett lashed out at Mr Obama saying the deaths of their friends was “not worthy of ten minutes of his time.”

Seneca police said they arrested six men Wednesday in connection with the beating of a Franklin, NC, man outside a restaurant earlier this month.

The attack happened just before 1 a.m. on March 17 in the parking lot of Applebee’s at 696 Bypass 123.

According to an incident report, police arrived to find a man lying face down in the parking lot.

The report said that a woman told police that there were several black men attacking the 32-year-old white man, whose identity was redacted.

“Upon exiting the restaurant he was jumped by a mob of individuals, and severely beaten about the head and torso,” said John Covington, the Seneca police chief. “The report was that racial slurs were being used toward the victim.”

The man told police that he didn’t know what happened, didn’t remember coming to the restaurant and didn’t know why he was attacked, according to the report.

We spoke with the man, who, almost a week later, has two black eyes and a swollen face. He told us he was leaving the restaurant when a group of black men near the door called him a “tree honkey.”
