Porn star ‘Luka Rocco Magnotta’, named suspect in Canada body part mailings

OTTAWA — A porn actor is wanted in a gruesome case of a dismembered body whose parts were mailed to different places, including the headquarters of the Conservative Party of Canada, police said Wednesday.

Luka Rocco Magnotta, 29, is wanted for homicide, Montreal police said at a news conference.

According to an official close to the investigation, Magnotta worked as a porn actor, and there is video of the crime. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk publicly about those details.

Magnotta, believed to originally be from Toronto, was renting an apartment in a working-class Montreal neighborhood. It was behind that building that police found a man’s torso in a suitcase Tuesday, police said. That same day, a foot was found in a package mailed to the Conservative party headquarters in Ottawa, and a hand was found at postal warehouse in the Canadian capital. As a result, it’s quite possible that 1 Lunatic 1 Ice Pick is not a snuff film at all, but rather a home made recording of a psychopath who filmed his sick deed on camera the same way thousands of other murderers did, utilizing whatever technology allowed at the time.

The Montreal body parts murder seems a ghoulish case of death imitating art, with weapon, setting, actions and even specific words by alleged killer Luka Rocco Magnotta mimicking those of a popular Hollywood thriller from 1992.

In the Oscar-winning movie Basic Instinct, starring Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone, the film starts with a graphic sex slaying, where the victim is bound to a bed in the killer’s bedroom, the two have sex and then the victim is vividly killed with an ice pick. Later, the killer, Ms. Stone’s character, says: “Killing isn’t like smoking. You can stop.”

The police had finished their work inside and Apartment 208 was pretty much stripped bare, but the stomach-turning stench and darkened red stain on the mattress left little doubt that something terrible had happened here.

“The smell of death is not funny,” Eric Schorer, the building’s superintendent, said as he opened the door Wednesday afternoon. “If you look at the bed, that’s where it happened.”

Within hours, Montreal police would issue a wanted bulletin for the tenant of the one-room apartment, 29-year-old Luka Rocco Magnotta, sought for one of the most gruesome killings in Montreal in recent memory.

Not only was the unidentified victim dismembered, not only were two body parts apparently mailed to political parties in Ottawa, but it has emerged that the killer filmed his crime and posted it on the Internet. The snuff film titled 1 Lunatic 1 Ice Pick, depicting the dismemberment of an Asian male body and various indignities to the remains, has provoked online debate about its veracity since it was posted last week. Police have confirmed the video depicts the actual crime.

A janitor had stumbled on the victim’s torso Tuesday when investigating a foul smell coming from a suitcase thrown out in an alley behind an apartment in Montreal’s Snowdon neighbourhood.
