President Obama signed an executive order entitled, “HIV Care Continuum Initiative” that will create a national movement and federal involvement in the war on HIV/AIDS.

This EO will “coordinate Federal efforts in response to recent advances regarding how to prevent and treat HIV infection. The Initiative will support further integration of HIV prevention and care efforts; promote expansion of successful HIV testing and service delivery models; encourage innovative approaches to addressing barriers to accessing testing and treatment; and ensure that Federal resources are appropriately focused on implementing evidence-based interventions that improve outcomes along the HIV care continuum.”

Meanwhile, some immigrants and refugees are being allowed into the United States and other Western Countries with known Commuicable  and other mental health issues to citizens of hosting country;

WHATS UP WITH THAT?  Until, we are able to give our own countires a clean bill of health, don’t you think we should fix the problems in our own countries of Disease that is already here and Mental Health.  Instead of turning all of us into a MAD Petrie Dish experiment.

Arrival in the United States: Process, Health Status, & Screening of Refugees & Immigrants

There is great diversity among immigrant populations arriving in the United States each year, with a concomitant wide spectrum of health needs. Some immigrants arrive with infectious diseases of personal or public health significance; others with untreated chronic conditions such as vitamin deficiencies, diabetes, or hypertension; and many with both infectious and chronic disease issues. Two of these groups, refugees and internationally adopted children, have more health information available than other groups, so much of the published screening recommendations is based on studies of these groups.

State health departments are notified by CDC about refugee new arrivals. A secure electronic system, the Electronic Disease Notification System, alerts states of refugee arrivals that have class A conditions (with waiver) and class B conditions. Class A conditions are defined as those that preclude an immigrant or refugee from entering the United States. Class B conditions are defined as physical or mental abnormalities, diseases, or disabilities that are permanent or serious enough to amount to a substantial departure from normal well-being.

Newly arrived refugees are encouraged to receive stateside evaluation and treatment, conducted at state or local health departments, as well as private clinics and community health centers. Ideally, these examinations are done within 3 months of US arrival. Because there is no required nationwide process for postarrival health assessments, the timing and thoroughness of postarrival refugee health evaluations vary from state to state. For nonrefugee immigrants, no formal mechanism or funding source is available for medical screening; therefore, immigrants, with the exception of international adoptees, do not routinely receive any postarrival medical screening services. Many clinicians are unfamiliar with screening recommendations and diseases endemic to immigrants’ countries of origin and are unprepared to deal with language, social, and cultural barriers in caring for new arrivals. In addition, refugees and immigrants often have other demands related to their new environment that may compete with their perception of need for health evaluations and treatment. Primary care providers in South King County are serving an influx of refugee patients who are seeking care in the U.S. health care system for the first time. Many refugees experience marked disparities in infectious and various chronic diseases. Many new arrivals have serious health conditions needing immediate attention and follow-up.  In addition to contagious diseases, many refugees have experienced trauma, may be suffering from mental health conditions, hypertension, diabetes, skin, vision and dental problems, and/or malnourishment.  In particular, refugees resettled in the U.S., the U.K., and Australia have been shown to have an increased risk of suffering from malnutrition, anemia, lead poisoning, tuberculosis, malaria, HIV, hepatitis, and intestinal parasites (Ackerman, 1997), (Lifson et al. 2002),  (Miller et al. 2000), (Varkey et al. 2007).

German authorities are becoming increasingly concerned with the number of summer camps and special schools brainwashing youngsters into worshipping a movement that killed six million Jews in the Holocaust.

A recent raid on one camp turned up jigsaw puzzles showing Germany’s pre-World War 2 borders and colouring books where children were encouraged to crayon in the moustache of Hitler.

Child welfare expert Günther Hoffmann said: ‘If ideological influence reaches such proportions that it can threaten children’s well-being, state or civic bodies are obliged to look into the situation.

‘If we don’t, we are going to incur massive problems in the future.’

A Boys’ Camp to Redefine Gender

Over the past three years, photographer Lindsay Morris has been documenting a four-day camp for gender nonconforming boys and their parents.

The camp, “You Are You” (the name has been changed to protect the privacy of the children and is also the name of Morris’ series), is for “Parents who don’t have a gender-confirming 3-year-old who wants to wear high heels and prefers to go down the pink aisle in K-Mart and not that nasty dark boys’ aisle,” Morris said with a laugh.

It is also a place for both parents and children to feel protected in an environment that encourages free expression.

“[The kids] don’t have to look over their shoulders, and they can let down their guard. Those are four days when none of that matters, and they are surrounded by family members who support them,” Morris said.

Morris has stated that her photographic goal for the project is “to represent the spirit of these boys as they shine.” Some of the ways in which the kids shine is through the talent and fashion shows at camp that are popular and for which the campers come well-prepared.

I remember when I was in middle school and them letting us put mercury in our  bare hands, to feel how heavy it was for a liquid.  My parents can tell you the same thing and we are all fine!  If Mercury was that deadly, would they allow this to take place?  I seriously doubt it.   Now they are warning against enviromental  toxins damaging fetuses.  Thanks Monsanto and others. 

 

 

ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS AFFECT DEVELOPING FETUS

A study conducted by researchers based at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has shown that when pregnant mothers-to-be are exposed to high levels of common environmental toxins it stimulates more frequent energetic spurts of motor activity in the developing fetus. Some chemical toxins are also linked to fewer changes in fetal heart rate, which typically correspond to fetal activity. The study, which was recently published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology, found traces of organochlorines, including PCBs, DDT, and other toxic pesticide chemicals that were banned over 30 years ago and are no longer in use, at detectable levels in all the pregnant women that took part in the study.

“Both fetal motor activity and heart rate reveal how the fetus is maturing and give us a way to evaluate how exposures may be affecting the developing nervous system. Most studies of environmental contaminants and child development wait until children are much older to evaluate effects of things the mother may have been exposed to during pregnancy; here we have observed effects in utero,” explains Janet DiPietro, Associate Dean for Research at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and lead author of the study.

Only an insane minority is still of the persuasion that Thimerosal belongs in any vaccines, as studies linking the chemical to autism, brain damage, and other conditions number in the hundreds (http://www.autismtreatmentclinics.com/Research.html). Something terrible has happened to the soul of the Republican Party. We’ve gone beyond bad economic doctrine. We’ve even gone beyond selfishness and special interests. At this point we’re talking about a state of mind that takes positive glee in inflicting further suffering on the already miserable.

The occasion for these observations is, as you may have guessed, the monstrous farm bill the House passed last week.

Why the Government Should Pay Farmers to Plant Cover Crops

Globally, 2012 will likely rank as one of the ten hottest in recorded history, The New York Times reports. If it does, “it will mean that the 10 warmest years on record all fell within the past 15 years, a measure of how much the planet has warmed.” Here in the US, last year was far and away the hottest ever on record. In other words, climate change is no longer a theory or a model or an abstract worry involving future generations. It’s happening, now—and if you want to see its likely effect on farming, look at the breadbasket state of Kansas, where the same prolonged drought that reduced corn and soy yields is now pinching the winter wheat crop, as I wrote a few days ago. On Wednesday, the UDSA declared much of the wheat belt a disaster area because of the drought’s effect on the crop.

For decades, farm bills have had two major pieces. One piece offers subsidies to farmers; the other offers nutritional aid to Americans in distress, mainly in the form of food stamps (these days officially known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP).

Farm Program Pays $1.3 Billion to People Who Don’t Farm

EL CAMPO, Tex. — Even though Donald R. Matthews put his sprawling new residence in the heart of rice country, he is no farmer. He is a 67-year-old asphalt contractor who wanted to build a dream house for his wife of 40 years.

Yet under a federal agriculture program approved by Congress, his 18-acre suburban lot receives about $1,300 in annual “direct payments,” because years ago the land was used to grow rice.

Matthews is not alone. Nationwide, the federal government has paid at least $1.3 billion in subsidies for rice and other crops since 2000 to individuals who do no farming at all, according to an analysis of government records by The Washington Post.

Some of them collect hundreds of thousands of dollars without planting a seed. Mary Anna Hudson, 87, from the River Oaks neighborhood in Houston, has received $191,000 over the past decade. For Houston surgeon Jimmy Frank Howell, the total was $490,709.

Long ago, when subsidies helped many poor farmers, you could defend the whole package as a form of support for those in need. Over the years, however, the two pieces diverged. Farm subsidies became a fraud-ridden program that mainly benefits corporations and wealthy individuals. Meanwhile food stamps became a crucial part of the social safety net.

So House Republicans voted to maintain farm subsidies — at a higher level than either the Senate or the White House proposed — while completely eliminating food stamps from the bill.

To fully appreciate what just went down, listen to the rhetoric conservatives often use to justify eliminating safety-net programs. It goes something like this: “You’re personally free to help the poor. But the government has no right to take people’s money” — frequently, at this point, they add the words “at the point of a gun” — “and force them to give it to the poor.”

It is, however, apparently perfectly O.K. to take people’s money at the point of a gun and force them to give it to agribusinesses and the wealthy.

Now, some enemies of food stamps don’t quote libertarian philosophy; they quote the Bible instead. Representative Stephen Fincher of Tennessee, for example, cited the New Testament: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” Sure enough, it turns out that Mr. Fincher has personally received millions in farm subsidies.

Given this awesome double standard — I don’t think the word “hypocrisy” does it justice — it seems almost anti-climactic to talk about facts and figures. But I guess we must.  >>more<<

The Knockout Game: Racial Violence and the Conspicuous Silence of the Media.

By now, almost everyone has seen one of the semi-amusing videos of black teen mobs rampaging through a store.  Maybe we’ve even seen the non-amusing pictures of the victims, or heard their stories.  Most Americans have heard of recent violent  ”flash mobs,” which are the bands of black teens that attack mostly white victims and white businesses, as even the New York Times once noted.

But the flash mobs, which are more accurately called “race riots” or “racial mob violence,” are not the only interesting topic to cover in our national conversation about race.  There is also the “knockout game,” which is stunning in its brutal simplicity and stark racial significance.

The knockout game involves “unprovoked attacks on innocent bystanders,” according to police who have had to deal with it.  A retired officer explained, “Normally it was a group of black males, one of which would strike him as hard as he could in the face, attempting to knock him out with one punch,” says retired Sgt. Don Pizzo.  The victims are typically not robbed, but simply punched with no provocation.  Such attacks have been reported in Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, and New Jersey.

The knockout game has claimed at least one life so far.  In St. Louis this year, 72-year old Hoang Nguyen was walking with his wife, Yen, when four “young people” attacked.  The attacker pushed the old man’s face to the side to make a “clear target for his fist,” recalled his wife.  Nguyen was punched so hard that he fell to the ground and struck his head.  Then the attacker turned on Nguyen’s 59-year-old wife, punching her so hard that she suffered a broken eye socket.  She could only watch as her husband was then kicked repeatedly.  Hoang succumbed to his injuries later that day.  A young black male, 18-year-old Elex Murphy, is charged with first-degree murder.

In addition, a mob of young black males can be seen playing the game here.  The video shows the group attacking a young white man named Adam Taylor, who was left with internal bleeding, bruising of the brain, severe whiplash, and scratches on his face when he was beaten in Columbia, MO in 2009.

Sgt. Pizzo noted that the attacks fit a pattern: “black attackers on a white victim — and the victim was often an older person walking alone.”  In a thorough and sensible piece on the subject in a local arts and entertainment magazine, eight of the victims interviewed were white, one was black, and one was Latino.  All of the attackers, or “players,” were black.  Some witnesses claim that they have white relatives who play the game and that therefore the game is not a racial issue.  But anyone who reviews the reporting — when race is revealed, at least — will see that the attackers are predominantly if not exclusively black.

As one player of the game says, “[w]e used to walk to where a lot of people be at and hit ‘em. If one of the homeboys didn’t knock him out, then the other would come. Whoever knock him out would be king.”

Local media outlets have failed to report on the racial aspect of the attacks.  At best, the media will allow the race of attackers to be revealed by mugshots, or quotations from police or victims.  This follows a conscious policy of self-censorship that has been openly admitted by major newspapers.

Pat Mahaney who was attacked by 6 black teens in August of 2012 because they were bored died. So can these 6 be tried for murder now?

CINCINNATI – A man assaulted and robbed by six teens during a “boredom beating” in North College Hill has died.

Pat Mahaney, 46, passed away Friday at University of Cincinnati Medical Center a little less than a year after the vicious beating that caused him to suffer internal bleeding and put him in the hospital for four days.

Investigators determined the teens instigated the August 2012 attack because they were “bored” and looking for something to do.

North College Hill Police Chief Gary Foust said the juveniles jumped Mahaney from behind, hit him in the head and knocked him to the ground with a six-pack of beer he had just purchased.

“As they were approaching the individual they actually discussed this event, before actually doing the event,” Foust said.

Marty Korte said he still doesn’t understand why anyone would want to hurt his neighbor.

“He was a good boy. He was taking care of his mother,” said Korte, who has lived on the Dallas Avenue block where Mahaney was attacked for 50 years.

He said the attack affected Mahaney socially as well as physically. Korte said he had only seen Mahaney one time since the incident because Mahaney “was afraid to walk down the street.”

Hamilton County prosecutor’s office spokeswoman Julie Wilson said prosecutor Joe Deters has asked the county coroner to perform an autopsy to see if the injuries sustained during the attack played a role in Mahaney’s death.

The teens, who were 13 to 14 years old at the time of the attack, were charged with felonious assault and aggravated riot. Their cases are being tried separately in juvenile court.

Three of the six suspects pleaded guilty in March to felonious assault in a plea agreement in which prosecutors agreed to drop aggravated riot charges.
