Henry Ford’s first Model-T was built to run on hemp gasoline and the CAR ITSELF WAS CONSTRUCTED FROM HEMP! On his large estate, Ford was photographed among his hemp fields. Henry Ford used hemp to not only construct cars but also fuel them. As an alternative to methanol, hemp has at least one glowing report: the plant produces up to four times more cellulose per acre than trees. And a hemp crop grows a little quicker than a forest. As for an alternative to petroleum… Hemp grows like mad from border to border in America; so shortages are unlikely. And, unlike petrol, unless we run out of soil, hemp is renewable. Growing and harvesting the stuff has much less environmental impact than procuring oil.  MORE


Fracturing as a method to stimulate shallow, hard rock oil wells dates back to the 1860s. It was applied by oil producers in PennsylvaniaNew YorkKentucky, and West Virginia by using liquid and later also solidified nitroglycerin. Later, the same method was applied to water and natural gas wells.[3] The first industrial use of hydraulic fracturing was as early as 1903, according to T.L. Watson.[4] Before that date, hydraulic fracturing was used at Mt. Airy Quarry, near Mt AiryNorth Carolina where it was (and still is) used to separate granite blocks from bedrock.[citation needed]
The idea to use acid as a nonexplosive fluid for well stimulation was introduced in the 1930s. Due to acid etching, fractures would not close completely and therefore productivity was enhanced. The same phenomenon was discovered with water injection and squeeze cementing operations.[3]
The relationship between well performance and treatment pressures was studied by Floyd Farris of Stanolind Oil and Gas Corporation. This study became a basis of the first hydraulic fracturing experiment, which was conducted in 1947 at the Hugoton gas field in Grant County of southwestern Kansas by Stanolind.[3][5] For the well treatment 1,000 US gallons (3,800 l; 830 imp gal) of gelled gasoline and sand from the Arkansas River was injected into the gas-producing limestone formation at 2,400 feet (730 m). The experiment was not very successful as deliverability of the well did not change appreciably. The process was further described by J.B. Clark of Stanolind in his paper published in 1948. A patent on this process was issued in 1949 and an exclusive license was granted to the Halliburton Oil Well Cementing Company. On March 17, 1949, Halliburton performed the first two commercial hydraulic fracturing treatments in Stephens County, Oklahoma, and Archer County, Texas.[3] Since then, hydraulic fracturing has been used to stimulate approximately a million oil and gas wells.
 

Pennsylvania Fracking Law Opens Up Drilling on College Campuses

Last year, when Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett suggested offsetting college tuition fees by leasing parts of state-owned college campuses to natural gas drillers, more than a few Pennsylvanians were left blinking and rubbing their eyes. But it was no idle threat: After quietly moving through the state Senate and House, this week the governor signed into law a bill that opens up 14 of the state’s public universities to fracking, oil drilling, and coal mining on campus.
For a system starved by budget cuts, it’s an appetizing deal: The Indigenous Mineral Resources Development Act mandates that 50 percent of all fees and royalties from the mineral leases will be retained by the university where those minerals are mined, 35 percent will be distributed across the state system, and another 15 percent will go towards subsidizing student tuition.  MORE

Ohio Schools checking for gas, oil below

The state has told public universities and community colleges in the path of Ohio’s drilling boom to figure out how much of the oil- and gas-rich Utica shale lies below their campuses.
These “property inventories” are required by a new state law that opened public lands to drilling. Though the debate over that law focused on whether drilling should be allowed in state parks and forests, it covers all public land.
It’s also prompted a debate over whether the state’s 37 colleges and universities should profit from “fracking.”
“We’re not coming out and saying we’re opposed to fracking, but where this process has been conducted, there have been problems,” said Geoff Buckley, an environmental historian at Ohio University.
“Once the groundwater is contaminated, it’s very hard to clean up.”  MORE

Texas oilman and corporate raider T. Boone Pickens is a major financier and evangelist of natural gas exploration across the United States, from the Haynesville Shale to the Marcellus. He claims that natural gas paves the road to energy independence in his “Pickens Plan4.” He says that it’s “green,” and it seems he came to this realization right around the time his oil wells stopped being productive. Interestingly, according to BusinessWeek, “Pickens owns more water than any other individual in the U.S. and is looking to control even more5.” So, if all goes according to his Plan, groundwater across the country will end up contaminated by the energy we buy from him, but he will be able to sell us all the clean water we need. Pickens Plan? We say slim pickings, man!
