Philip Johnson’s Pro-Nazi Sympathies Detailed in FBI File

Philip Johnson’s grandiose pavilion for the 1964 World’s Fair wasn’t the only skeleton exhumed from his past today. The first public viewing of the pavilion in 27 years was followed by the release online of the renowned architect’s FBI file by the Paleofuture blog, where it was obtained via Freedom of Information Act request. The file, which comprises 171 pages of letters, memoranda, and other documents detailing the architect’s public and private life, reignites the discussion over his controversial Nazi sympathies at a time of intense public interest in the fate of some of his work. The file, embedded in two parts below, also reveals that Johnson was the target of a White House background check in 1963, which Paleofuture presumes was linked to his involvement with the 1964 World’s Fair as architect of the New York State pavilion.

The dossier begins with a comprehensive internal FBI memorandum noting that “since 1932″ Johnson, a “homo-sexual,” has “expressed his interest in the coming Revolution and has stated that things will be different ‘when the revolution comes.’” Other letters in the cache are more mysterious, like an anonymous communication from a “loyal American citizen” who writes that though Johnson’s family, or “his people,” are beyond reproach, Philip Johnson “is mesmerized by this evil that is trying overpower the good in the world.”

Infamous boxing promoter Don King isn’t holding a grudge against the Rev. Al Sharpton in the wake of a blockbuster report detailing how Sharpton snitched on King to the FBI.

King on Sunday called the revelations about Sharpton’s 1980s work as a paid undercover informant“old news” and praised Sharpton as a “stand-up person” for secretly recording mobsters with a customized Hartmann briefcase provided by the feds.

“Al Sharpton had enough guts to fight, if it is true, to fight for others spending their ways and means to take away opportunity,” King told The Post.

“How many people would put their lives in danger?”

The wild-haired fight organizer wouldn’t say if he ever saw Sharpton carrying the briefcase when they met, or if he suspected that the then-tubby activist was secretly a rat.

“I’m not into mud-slinging,” King said.

But King — who was in Las Vegas for Saturday’s Manny Pacquiao victory over Timothy Bradley at the MGM Grand Garden Arena — hailed Sharpton for painting large X’s on the homes of drug dealers at the time, to identify them to neighbors and cops.

“They should give him five stars for service and duty above and beyond for the betterment of our nation, for this great country of America,” King said.

“The people’s greatest resources are its children, and he put himself in the fight for our youth. He makes us live up to that creed, one man, for liberty and justice for all.”

“I commend Sharpton for his bold, courageous Americanism,” he added.

According to The Smoking Gun website, the FBI “flipped” Sharpton into working as a confidential informant after snaring him in a sting operation in which he was videotaped discussing a drug deal with an agent posing as a South American narcotics trafficker.

In an exclusive interview published Saturday in The Post, former Sharpton crony Robert Curington said the agent initially wanted to meet with King, but King “knew something was off” and had Sharpton talk to him instead.

Curington also said Sharpton jumped at the chance to get in on the agent’s phony deal, saying: “It was greed. He just wanted the money.”

As an informant, Sharpton’s targets included King, who was being investigated as part of a probe called “Crown Royal,” which was shut down when Newsday first exposed Sharpton’s work as an informant in 1988.  >>more<<

From NPR: Is A Beating In Detroit A Hate Crime? YES IT IS, and SO IS THAT QUESTION!

HECK YES THIS IS A HATE CRIME PLAIN AND SIMPLE, any sane person that happens to live in an area or city that has a large BLACK population knows and sees blacks mostly youth running out in front of cars to walking in the middle of the street and getting angry almost daring you to hit them; when you honk or stop until they move with very intimidating threatening behavior towards the motorist. It's insane. I have personaly observed this kind of behavior numerous times.

I know one afternoon while I was waiting for the City bus to take me downtown, while standing waiting at the bus stop I saw two pre-teen/teenage black males that kept running across a main busy roadway not looking or caring, my bus came and I went to my destination, when returning home I saw a bunch of police cars parked at a nearby carwash, as I was walking by I recognized a car and the person who owned it sitting in the back seat of a police car. I didn't know what was going on until I returned home and made mention of what I saw. Thats when I was told this person that was in the back of the police car had hit some black kid who ran out in front of him while driving on that busy roadway. I wanted to go back up to the carwash and tell them what I saw happening earlier in the day, but luckily this guy wasn't charged with anything that I am aware of.

Whole Point of that little story, and trust me I have many more is that kind of thing happens on a daily basis in the city i'm from, and it's insane.

  The family of the suburban Detroit man who was severely beaten after accidentally hitting a young boy with his pickup truck has raised more than $100,000 to help pay for his medical bills.

  Steve Utash, 54, was first hospitalized last week when he accidentally struck a 10-year-old boy named David Harris, who had seemingly taken a step off a nearby curb. Utash stopped his car and got out to check on the child, but as he did this a crowd of up to 12 people began beating him, causing serious head injuries that ultimately placed the man in critical condition.

  Harris is expected to recover from his injuries – which include a broken leg – but Utash is still in critical condition, and it’s unclear if his health has improved at all since Detroit police Sgt. Michael Woody remarked he was “really not looking all that good.”  >>more from RT<<<

The Somali Community is a Promising Economic Powerhouse In Ohio Source: SomaliCAN Outreach Newsletter, August 2009 Issue  On July 1, 2009, the Governor of the State of Ohio, and members of the House, in recognition of the contributions of the Somali community to the state, honored the Independence Day of Somalia by raising the Somali flag at the Ohio State House along with the US and Ohio State flags. This was a welcome gesture from legislators and the state leadership for the enterprising Somali community, the newest Americans in Ohio.  There are more than 45,000 Somali Americans in Central Ohio according to the Somali Community Access Network, a community based nonprofit that provides services and resources to the Somali community in Ohio. The majority of these Somali Americans live in Franklin County which includes the City of Columbus.  The State of Ohio has the second largest Somali population in the US after Minnesota. However, Columbus has the largest concentration of Somalis in any US city. Somalis started coming to Columbus in the early 1990s after the central government in Somalia was overthrown by armed warlords who led the country into chaos. Since then, Columbus became a favorite destination for Somalis from Africa as well as secondary immigrants from other states. 

The Somali community is a powerhouse in regards to its economic impact of the 
Midwest. The economic and political clout that the community wields is expected to 
increase in the next decade. It is the community to watch as it transitions from seeking 
help to giving hope and help to millions of Americans. 

WOW, if they are bringing so much business to the City of Columbus, then why is the North End of Columbus looking more like a war zone day by day, when it used to be a thriving area as far as shopping, resturants, etc.  Funny all I've seen with the closing of Northland Mall, Building of Easton, and Polaris in a totally different county and then to find this!  WHAT?  Since  SomaliCANS  have been here in Columbus-Central Ohio; are businesses that have been here before I was born closed down, it looks more like I said a war zone, ghost town.

The newly elected Minneapolis City Council member, Abdi Warsame, has been a busy guy lately.  On Friday he presented a resolution to the city council to proclaim July 1 'Somali American Day' to celebrate the African country's independence from Italy and the UK.   (And we all know how well that worked out!).  Then he lead a protest against Kenya.

The date holds significance among Somalis, who celebrate independence day on July 1 both in Somalia and the United States diaspora.

Abdi Warsame, the first Somali-American on the Minneapolis City Council, praised the resolution at a council meeting on Friday

. A gathering of Somali-American men were in attendance.

“This is a very important resolution for me,” Warsame said. “And it actually came from the elders and the community leaders who wanted to highlight the contributions, the culture, the values of the Somali-American community, which is a large and growing population in the city of Minneapolis.”

The July 1 independence day commemorates when the Somali Republic was created by uniting two territories previously controlled by Italy and Britain.

'This Is Not A Life': A Journey To Israel's 'Open' Detention Center

ISRAEL IMPRISONS AFRICAN ASYLUM SEEKERS IN AN 'OPEN' DETENTION CENTER

Earlier this year, I joined a small team of doctors, nurses, and volunteers from Physicians for Human Rights, an Israeli non-profit organization, on a trip to Holot Open Detention Center. Situated in the heart of the Negev desert, miles from any major city, Holot was erected in late 2013 to hold 3,000 of the 53,000 African asylum seekers who have made their way to Israel since the mid-2000s, mostly from Sudan and Eritrea.

Asylum seekers at the Holot Open Detention Center are free to enter and leave in between three daily headcounts. Even if people do leave, by the time they reach the nearest city, they will only have an hour or two before they have to report back to Holot. They are prohibited from working, except for low-paying jobs cleaning the prison, and rely on a meager allowance of about $45 every ten days, according to Haaretz, a popular Israeli newspaper. With this money, they must buy clothes, call family members, and pay for transportation.

According to the Guardian, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu called the asylum seekers “infiltrators” whose presence in Israel is illegal and a demographic threat to the ethnic identity of the Jewish state. Until they create a path to legally deport the asylum seekers, the authorities maintain that these people must be kept behind bars. In the words of former Minister of the Interior Eli Yishai, “We will make the lives of infiltrators bitter until they leave.”

After Israel's High Court declared the policy of imprisoning illegal migrants for three years unconstitutional, the Israeli government found an original way to ruin refugees' lives. Migrants are now given an ultimatum: indefinite detention, in the newly opened Holot facility, or “voluntary” deportation to Uganda.   >>more from VICE<<

Types of camps

According to Moshe Lifshitz,^[31] the Nazi camps divided as follows:

• Hostage camps: camps where hostages were held and killed as reprisals.
• Labor camps: concentration camps where interned inmates had to do hard physical labor under inhumane conditions and cruel treatment. Some of these camps were sub-camps of bigger camps, or "operational camps", established for a temporary need.
• POW camps: concentration camps where prisoners of war were held after capture. POWs were usually soon assigned to labor camps.
• Camps for rehabilitation and re-education of Poles: camps where the intelligentsia of the ethnic Poles were held, and "re-educated" according to Nazi values as slaves.
• Transit and collection camps: camps where inmates were collected and routed to main camps, or temporarily held (Durchgangslager or Dulag).
• Extermination camps: These camps differed from the rest, since not all of them were also concentration camps. Although none of the categories is independent, and many camps could be classified as a mixture of several of the above, and all camps had some of the elements of an extermination camp, systematic extermination of new-arrivals occurred in very specific camps. Of these, four were extermination camps, where all new-arrivals were simply killed – the "Aktion Reinhard" camps (Treblinka, Sobibor and Belzec), together with Chelmno. Two others (Auschwitz and Majdanek) were combined concentration and extermination camps. Others like Maly Trostenets were at times classified as "minor extermination camps".^[32]
